Munro Clinic, Snowfields, SE1
This Design and Build Contract secured in competitive tender comprised the complete remodelling and refurbishment of the former Munro Clinic and the construction of a new four-storey extension and roof annexe which combined to form new offices, training and consulting rooms for the Trust and its Agencies.
Due to the proximity of Guys & St Thomas’s Hospital and in particular, the adjacent MRI unit, craneage could not be used and where ferrous plant and materials were a pre-requisite to the construction process, very careful consideration and programming were necessary. The new extension, occupies 25% of the plan area of the site; it was founded with 12m mini bored piles on a structurally designed slab and traditionally constructed of insulated brick cavity walls, a mix of suspended timber and beam and block floors and a timber/steel mansard roof. Flat roof coverings were asphalt, slated roofs eternit, dormer roof coverings and flashings lead. New double glazed UPVC windows/external doors were used throughout, the front elevation brickwork was cleaned and the flanks finished in through colour render. Other features included the provision of a new hydraulic passenger lift, air-conditioning, a full fire alarm system, burglar alarm, CCTV, entry phones, panic alarm system, computerised proximity card access and bespoke reception areas. The building was completed to a high standard, incorporating suspended ceilings, heavy-duty ash doors, quality ironmongery and carpet throughout. The main staircase and entrance areas were resurfaced with composite “Linotol” flooring. The Munro Centre was officially opened by, John Bloomfield on the 23rd November 1999.
